The famous oasis city Kashgar, in the west of Xinjiang district is sited at the ancient Silk Road, and west of the Taklamakan desert. Kashgar is an important cultural center of the Uyghur people n Xinjiang
It is the starting point for the Korakoram highway to Islamabad in Pakistan.
The tomb of Abakh Khoja in Kashgar is considered the holiest Muslim site in Xinjiang. Built in the 17th century, the tiled mausoleum 5 km northeast of the city centre also contains the tombs of five generations of his family.
Abkah was a powerful ruler, controlling Khotan, Yarkand, Korla, Kucha and Aksu as well as Kashgar.
The huge Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China, is located in the heart of the city.

The large majority of the population of the prefecture Kashgar belongs to the Uyghur ethnic group.
Other ethnic groups in the prefecture consist of Han, Tajik, Kyrgyz, Hui, Uzbek, Tujia, Miao, Mongol, Tibetan, Zhuang and others.
The country Kyrgiztan is about 200 km to the west, and Tajikistan is about 200 km to the southwest, while Pakistan is situated about 200 km to the south. Afghanistan is about 200 km to the southwest.
